Inlet Protection

MCS Inc. uses compost filter socks as storm drain inlet protection.  Unlike inlet sacks, filter socks trap and retain pollutants that are commonly found on most construction sites. Not only will Siltsoxx™ compost filter socks retain pollutants but they will eliminate certain types through bioremediation. Unlike traditional methods of inlet protection Siltsoxx™ compost filter socks stop more than sediment from entering storm drains. Many hydrocarbons can wash into storm drains and waterways as a result of construction activities. Stop more than sediment with a Siltsoxx™ compost filter sock inlet protector. Inlet filter protectors can be installed by one or two people without the aid of machinery or the need to remove any inlet grates.  Generally an inlet filter sock will cost less than traditional methods and once the particular inlet is no longer in need of protection the Siltsoxx™ compost filter socks can be moved to another location.

• In addition to retaining sediment, compost can retain pollutants, such as heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, oil and grease, fuel, herbicides, pesticides, and other potentially hazardous substances, from storm water improving water quality downstream of the berm (USEPA, 1998).1

• Nutrients and hydrocarbons adsorbed and/or trapped by the compost filter can be naturally cycled and decomposed through bioremediation by microorganisms commonly found in the compost matrix (USEPA, 1998).1
