Sediment-(noun) Material that has been deposited by water, ice or wind. (The results of erosion.)

Compost Filter Socks ( SiltSoxx™, Filtersoxx™)

SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks are one of the sediment controls that are available from MCS Inc.  By utilizing the natural filtering properties of compost and the durability of woven mesh we are able to offer superior sediment controls to our clients.  Similar in nature to the EcoBerm®, SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks are able to filter storm water and retain pollutants in a self-contained unit.  SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks can be made in a variety of diameters from 8 inches to 32 inches.  There is a SiltSoxx™ compost filter sock size to correspond with and replace every type of silt fence in most states.  They are commonly used as sediment controls around the perimeters of a site and on the perimeters of a lot and can be vegetated or non-vegetated.  Vegetated varieties can be used as permanent post construction storm water controls.   SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks are often also used as inlet protectors as well.

There are many advantages to using SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks on your site.  They are available palletized in 150' sections of 8" diameter, 85' sections of 12" diameter and 45' sections of 18" diameter.  Palletized SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks can be purchased from our distributors and custom installations are available for larger diameter SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks.  Their flexibility and ease of installation make them ideal for LID projects.  They can easily wrap throughout tree lines and require no trenching.  This allows them to be installed quickly, efficiently and cost effectively.  Eliminating trenching also eliminates unnecessary soil disturbances.  SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks have greater contact with the soil reducing the chance of undercutting occurring, as is common with typical silt fence use.

Another advantage is the durability of the mesh.  MCS Inc. is a Filtrexx® installer and provider.  Through this relationship we are able to provide our clients with several varieties of SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks.  The greater durability of the mesh allows the SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks to stand up to construction site abuses that would destroy typical silt fence.  SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks have been run over, some repeatedly, and still maintain their integrity and functionality.  By offering several diameters MCS Inc. can provide our clients with a "one and done" installation.  Save money by avoiding the constant replacing of silt fence on your active lots and once construction is completed simply cut open the mesh and use the compost as a soil amendment.

In both the SiltSoxx™ compost filter socks and EcoBerm® compost filter berm compost quality is a major issue.  Like all of our products at MCS Inc. we use only the highest quality materials.  All compost used by MCS Inc. for any application is tested and approved by the EPA and/or state regulating authorities.

If you have a large job that needs immediate attention MCS Inc. can bring out our Express Blower™ truck to your site.  Our Express Blower™ truck allows us to quickly install large quantities of SiltSoxx™ compost filter sock right in the field to help you avoid costly fines and stop work orders.

EcoBerm®

EcoBerm® is one of several sediment controls that we at MCS Inc. offer to our clients. By utilizing the EcoBerm® our clients are able to reduce or eliminate the use of silt fence on their sites. EcoBerm® is a 100% biodegradable, natural product. It is made using our BermBuilder and a specialized mix of compost, wood mulch and Microblend®. Unlike silt fence an EcoBerm® can not only filter water but also trap certain pollutants within and biodegrade them. This means that the water that has passed through the EcoBerm® is cleaner than when it went in. This also means that your site will have less contaminants leaving it and entering nearby waterways. Ecoberm® does not require any trenching and adheres to the subsurface completely allowing EcoBerm® to be installed easily even if the ground is frozen or on an unlikely surface like concrete or asphalt.  Our Express Blower® truck and specialized BermBuilder allow us to easily install an EcoBerm® on virtually any site.

Another benefit that EcoBerm® has over silt fence is the ability to tie it into the site once you have completed construction. The EcoBerm® can be used as a soil amendment or as mulch at the end of its life span as a sediment control. There is no need to dispose of an EcoBerm® because it is 100% biodegradable. Save money on disposal and on maintenance. Once an EcoBerm® is installed it needs very little maintenance. If once should be run over it can be formed back into shape and sprayed with water. The tackifier will react and the berm will be fully functional with minimal effort. Unlike silt fence it doesn't tear, impede movements of animals, photo-degrade, or require trenching and staking.

A compost filter berm is a dike of compost or a compost product that is placed perpendicular to sheet flow runoff to control erosion in disturbed areas and retain sediment. It can be used in place of a traditional sediment and erosion control tool such as a silt fence. The compost filter berm, which is trapezoidal in cross section, provides a three-dimensional filter that retains sediment and other pollutants (e.g., suspended solids, metals, oil and grease) while allowing the cleaned water to flow through the berm. Composts used in filter berms are made from a variety of feedstocks, including municipal yard trimmings, food residuals, separated municipal solid waste, biosolids, and manure.1

Compost filter berms are generally placed along the perimeter of a site, or at intervals along a slope, to capture and treat storm water that runs off as sheet flow. A filter berm also can be used as a check dam in small drainage ditches. The berms can be vegetated or non-vegetated. Vegetated filter berms are normally left in place and provide long-term filtration of storm water as a post-construction best management practice (BMP). non-vegetated berms are often broken down once construction is complete and the compost is spread around the site as a soil amendment or mulch.1

Filter berms, in general, provide an effective physical barrier in sheet flow conditions; however, the use of compost in the filter berm provides additional benefits. These benefits include the following:1

• The compost retains a large volume of water, which helps prevent or reduce rill erosion and aids in establishing vegetation on the berm.

• The mix of particle sizes in the compost filter material retains as much or more sediment than traditional perimeter controls, such as silt fences or hay bale barriers, while allowing a larger volume of clear water to pass through the berm. Silt fences often become clogged with sediment and form a dam that retains storm water, rather than letting the filtered storm water pass through.

• In addition to retaining sediment, compost can retain pollutants, such as heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, oil and grease, fuel, herbicides, pesticides, and other potentially hazardous substances, from storm water improving water quality downstream of the berm (USEPA, 1998).

• Nutrients and hydrocarbons adsorbed and/or trapped by the compost filter can be naturally cycled and decomposed through bioremediation by microorganisms commonly found in the compost matrix (USEPA, 1998).)
