MCS Inc. Stream Bank Restoration
MCS Inc. is utilizing new technologies to solve an old problem. The increased amount of impervious surface that covers our Earth has several deleterious effects on our waterways. Aside from allowing storm water to pick up and transport pollutants, impervious surfaces also increase the speed and energy of storm water entering our waterways. This increased speed and energy causes scouring of creek beds and banks. As the scouring continues land is lost to the water and is ultimately deposited downstream. Trees along the banks become undercut and dangerous to homeowners and property. The banks where the scouring occurs suffer from loss of land and may encroach upon people's homes or other structures. The areas where the sediment is deposited can become prone to more frequent flooding. More flooding also threatens people's property, both private and commercial, and forces people to spend money on fixing these problems. The costs associated with flooding and losses of land are enormous compared to the cost of prevention and repair.
By utilizing growth media and protective mesh MCS Inc. is able to provide our clients with long lasting natural and aesthetically pleasing solutions. Our process involves re-grading the banks to a more natural slope and lining it with EdgeSaver™. Our EdgeSaver™ become vegetated and anchor themselves to the bank providing long term stability and protection. We also incorporate live willow stakes to provide even more strength to the bank and increase the natural riparian buffer zone. The combination of high strength mesh, vegetation and live willow stakes ensures that the bank is protected in several ways. This protection will last for years and will be far more pleasing than traditional concrete and rock gabion alternatives. By increasing the buffer zones on the banks pollutants are less likely to enter the waterway. The decrease in pollutants in our waterways will help to minimize the problems associated with algal blooms and high nutrient levels in our bays and oceans.
