Urban Gardening: Bringing Communties Together
At MCS Inc. we believe that everyone should have easy access to nutritious, safe, affordable food. In the United States of America we have some of the most fertile soil in the world. From this soil we are able to produce more food than any other nation and yet we still have citizens that go to bed hungry or are lacking easy access to helathy foods. Many urban communities exist in so-called "food deserts" where there are no grocery stores within several miles of the community. Unfortunately many of these communities are also in areas that are considered to "blighted" or "rundown." It is our goal to work with leaders in these communities to change not only where residents get their food but also what types of foods are avilable to them. Our Urban Gardening program seeks to replace vacant lots or any other type of open space that has been misused or underused. By empowering the local community to produce healthy food for low cost we are also empowering them to change the way they eat and view food and diet as a whole. MCS Inc. can provide material, knowledge and support to those communities that interested in creating a lush oasis in the "food desert." By using Filtrexx® Gardensoxx® in prefabricated palletized lengths or customized lengths we are able to create an Urban Garden in any area. The benfits of having healthy affordable food available to all are tremendous and MCS Inc. would liek to see all communites come together in the garden and create a safe, comfortable place for community members to gather and grow!
What are Gardensoxx®?
Filtrexx® Gardensoxx® are mesh socks filled with organic compost and used to grow plants anywhere. The tight woven mesh keeps the compost in the sock and keeps weed seeds out. This eliminates the need for heavy weeding like is common in traditional gardens. The ability for air to flow through the mesh increases the helathy and vitality of the rooting structures which allows them to abosorb more water and nutirents than if they were not exposed to this extra oxygen. Air flow also helps to reduce the potential for diseases and fungi to attack the plants form the roots up. A garden built from Gardensoxx® can be placed virtually anywhere. The lack of maintenance and ability to retain moisture makes them the ideal product for Urban Garden programs across the country. MCS Inc. can produce large amounts of Gardensoxx® in any length desired or have them palletized for easy shipment.
Below are pictures of some of the GardenSoxx® that MCS Inc. donated to the Trenton Boys and Girls Club for a summer class project. As you can see the GardenSoxx® are clean, easy and can be made to fit in various types of containers for gardening in urban areas and areas with little space.
Knowledge For Generations.
MCS Inc. not only works with Urban Garden programs but also with School Garden programs and after school programs. We tailor fully integrated lesson plans for each subject and use the garden as a safe and comfortable place for children of all ages to learn not only core curriculum but also valuable life skills. It is our aim to instill our children with the knowlege and ability to take what they have learned in school and apply it in their communities through both the School Garden programs and Urban Garden programs.
